Author Visit

Willow and Chestnut classes enjoyed a day with local author Matt Dickinson this week.

Matt not only writes books for children, teens and adults but also enjoys exploring the world. He talked to our children about climbing Mount Everest, covering the physical challenges, discussing the rights and wrongs of poorly-paid porters and yaks carrying heavy loads for the climbers, the issue of waste and overcrowding, the practicalities of eating and drinking and the dangers of a Toffee Crisp at altitude! The children were extremely engaged and set to work writing postcards from basecamp and choosing their tent buddies. After redrafting, editing and polishing their ideas, the children presented their work on enlarged postcards, illustrated the scene, then many read them out to their peers. Matt was very impressed with their work, and we were very proud of their creative responses to Matt's fascinating insights. We hope we will be able to work with Matt again in the future as he has more tales to share, of his time in the Amazon and Antarctic too! Many thanks to the Wells Literature Festival for arranging and funding this event.
